SciDev.Net was recently launched as an independent web site dedicated to the promotion of science and technology in the developing world. The site will attempt to alleviate the exclusion of large parts of the world’s population from many of the benefits of science and technology by providing a forum for authoritative news, information and comment about how science and technology can help meet the needs of developing nations. The journals Nature and Science forgot all about their rivalry, and helped the development of the SciDev.Net site. Moreover, they will continually provide free access each week to selected articles from their pages. The founder of SciDev.Net, David Dickson, a former news editor of Nature, hopes to use the benefits of electronic publishing to democratize the gathering and dissemination of information about science and to promote a true public understanding and appreciation of science in developing countries [Nature, 06 Dec. 2001].
