MA in ‘Migration & Ethnic Studies’, University of Amsterdam

Master of Art Degree Programme ‘Migration and Ethnic Studies’
University of Amsterdam, Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies
(IMES) and the International School for the Humanities and Social
Sciences

The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) at the University
of Amsterdam was established in 1993 to carry out and promote the
interdisciplinary study of internatinal migration and immigrant
integration from an international comparative perspective. IMES enjoys
the reputation to be the world’s largest university institute in this
field of research, and is involved in a large number of international
projects, including ones commissioned by the European Commission. As of
this year, IMES has entered into a collaboration with UvA’s
International School for the Humanities and Social Sciences. This
collaboration is manifested through course development by our staff, in
particular the development of the Master of Art Degree Programme
‘Migration and Ethnic Studies’.

We would like to draw the attantion of qualified applicants to our
Master of Art Degree Programme ‘Migration and Ethnic Studies’. This
Programme is now accepting applications for the 2002-2003 academic year.

The programme leading to a Master of Arts Degree in Migration and Ethnic
Studies seeks to explore the topical features of international migration
and the incorporation of immigrants in the cities and states of
destination. The programme covers the different forms, causes and
consequences of international migration, and will give particular
emphasis to the impact of globalisation, he regulation of international
migration by authorities at different levels or otherwise, the responses
of international migrants to the changing opportunity structure, and
various new features and perspectives such as transnationa-lism and
transnational ties. The programme also addresses issues of immigrant
incorporation, assimilation and diversity. These latter issues in
particular involve also the study of different patterns of incorporation
in various social fields, including the labour market, education,
politics and religion. This Master of Arts Degree Programme approaches
these fields of study in an interdisciplinary way, building on
theoretical and empirical contributions of sociologists,
anthropologists, geographers, economists, political scientists,
philosophers and historians. Fulfilling all the requirements could, in
principle, be accomplished between one year and two years.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies seeks
students with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant branch of
the humanities or social sciences. Applicants, furthermore, must have
successfully followed at least one BA course in social scientific
research methodology. Additional research methodology
courses-quantitative or qualitative-are required for students with
insufficient background in the methods of social research. The general
level should be equal to three years of a Dutch university education.
