A variable intake system able to develop in cylinder meridian plane a tumble motion coupled with a stratified charge of the fresh mixture was experimentally investigated. Several configurations of intake manifolds that developed a tumble motion for the mixture charge were designed and tested on a production engine for full load and speed map. The s.i. engine’s overall efficiency and pollutant products were analyzed by comparison, for the original and the new intake system configuration. Better performances: bsfc, torque, CH and CO pollutants products were found for the new configuration except for the NOx production.
