Double Side Grinding of Alumina Ceramics Using Diamond Wheels

Rezumat:

Acest proiect studiaza din punct de vedere technologic operatia de rectificare plana bilaterala aplicata fetelor paralele ale unor piese cilindrice din alumina utilizind doua pietre abrazive cu diamant. Materialele ceramice sunt atractive pentru multiple aplicatii datorita duritatii, rezistentei la compresiune, rezistentei termice, proprietatilor magnetice superioare, permeabilitatii magnetice si fragilitatii care le caracterizeaza.

Un experiment quadro-factorial a fost executat. Rugozitatea a fost masurata pentru fiecare dintre cele doua fete paralel ale piesei prelucrate, rata de eliminare a materialului a fost determinata printr-o metoda gravimetrica, iar planeitatea suprafetelor prelucrate a fost evaluata printr-o tehnica refractometrica cu laser.

Rezultatele au demonstrat faptul ca rectificarea plana bilaterala produce o foarte buna calitate de suprafata, o inalta precizie, si rate mari de indepartare a materialului, toate intr-un timp scurt. The present research refers to a technological assessment of the double side grinding operation applied simultaneously on both end faces of cylindrical pieces of alumina ceramics (Al2O3) using two vitrified bond diamond grinding wheels. Advanced ceramics, such is alumina (Al2O3), are attractive for many applications due to their high hardness, resistance to high compressive force, resistance to high temperature, chemical inertness, superior electrical properties, high magnetic permeability and brittleness.
A four-factorial experiment was conducted. The Ra roughness parameter was evaluated for each of the ground faces of the piece, the material removal rate was determined via a gravimetric method, and the flatness of the ground faces was assessed by the mean of specific indexes measured with laser refractometry technique.
Preliminary results presented in this report showed that double side grinding produces very good surface finish, a high precision, and high material removal rates, in short processing.
