Rezumat:
Wood deterioration, an essential environmental process through which complex organic matter is recycled,
destroys valuable historical and cultural objects made of wood, which causes serious losses in the cultural
heritage. Information on some specific features, associated with different types of degradation of lime wood
is important in planning appropriate conservation and specific consolidation procedures or other treatments.
A description of the morphological and compositional changes in the lime wood of icons and iconostases
subjected to long-term degradation under environmental conditions was provided by FT-IR spectrometry and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The qualitative and quantitative changes in the lignin and
carbohydrate components in wood were evaluated by FT-IR, the observation being made that all bands
assigned to carbohydrate compounds decrease with increasing wood degradation state. SEM data revealed
fibrils disruption and changes in their size.
