This present study was carried out to examine the effect of melatonin on some biomarkers of oxidative stress induced by aluminium exposure in Wistar albino rat’s blood. The rats were randomly divided in five groups: one control receiving tap water, second group 1000 ppb aluminium as aluminium sulphate
(AS), third group combination of 1000 ppb AS and melatonin 10 mg/100 ml tap water, fourth group melatonin 10 mg/100 ml tap water and fifth group 1000 ppb AS three months and after, one month, melatonin 10 mg/100 ml tap water. The level of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS)and superoxide dismutase (SOD)was increased significantly in rats exposed to AS, and significantly decrease of catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione reductase (GSH-r) levels suggesting that Al induced oxidative stress.Whenmelatonin was used, the levels of those oxidative stress biomarkers were recovered proofing a good antioxidant protection. The melatonin had an antioxidant activity protecting against free radicals produced in blood by al exposure.
