Femtosecond laser fabrication of metamaterials for high frequency microwave devices

The laser etching technique is used for configuration of micro-structures. Films of few-hundreds nm of gold deposited on glass or silicon are precisely processed by tightly focusing a femtosecond laser with 150fs pulse duration, 775nm wavelength, and energy of tens of nJ. The laser fluence is hold just above the ablation threshold. Thus, the evaporated film leaves behind structures with thin lateral size of about 1um. Using this technique, the fabrication

Photon Bloch oscillations in porous silicon optical superlattices

We report the first observation of oscillations of the electromagnetic field in an optical superlattice based on porous silicon. These oscillations are an optical equivalent of well-known electronic Bloch oscillations in crystals. Elementary cells of our structure are composed by microcavities whose coupling gives rise to the extended collective modes forming optical minigaps and minibands. By varying thicknesses of the cavities along the structure

ZnO as a material mostly adapted for the realization of room-temperature polariton lasers

Wannier-Mott excitons in the wurzite-type semiconductor material ZnO are stable at room temperature, have an extremely large oscillator strength, and emit blue light. This makes ZnO an excellent potential candidate for the fabrication of room-temperature lasers where the coherent light amplification is ruled by the fascinating mechanism of the Bose condensation of the exciton polaritons. We report the direct optical measurement of the exciton oscillator
