Rezumat:
Since the 1989 revolution in Romania, the educational system has experienced tremendous reform efforts. These reform efforts continue with Romania’s admission into the European Union. The area of special education has been particularly engaged in systemic reform given that students with disabilities were particularly underserved prior to the revolution. In this paper, we report on an investigation of the attitudes of preservice educators in Romania towards people with disabilities. We compare these results to results from comparable studies in other countries, and discuss the difficulties of drawing cross-cultural conclusions based on these studies. We also make suggestions for policy to improve attitudes towards people with disabilities in the context of intergroup contact theory.
