Rezumat:

A lower cost landing and return vehicle for Titan is proposed, with a new, optimal
escape program from the dense atmosphere by the Singular Deviators (SD)
method. It is a decisive extension to the classical calculus of variations and allows
solving discontinuous problems never permitted before. It is specially suited to the
optimization of atmospheric ascent of rocket vehicles, where the integrand in the
functional possesses week discontinuities at engine cut-off. All former solutions to
the extremal flight problems into an atmosphere were given by neglecting the effect
of the thrust-induced drag at engines’ burnout. The present SD method is
successfully used on considering this discontinuities and derive complete thrust
programming solution for atmospheric ascent. It is argued and demonstrated with
numerical results from flight simulations on both Earth and Titan. SDM opens an
uncovered field of investigation in mathematics and shows that a sensible extra
mass saving is added by discontinuous extremization. Numerical results show the
savings are more than twice higher for Titan than on Earth, due to considerable drag
effects of the Titan very dense atmosphere. The application to future planetary
missions is re-boosted by the recent highly successful landing on Titan of the
Huygens spacecraft.
