Rezumat:
A comparative study between solubilization and combustion methods used to prepare the organic solvent samples for liquid scintillation analyse is presented. The determination of tritium content in organic solvent waste generated during the operation of Romanian Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant represents an important step in radioactive waste management. Liquid scintillation spectrometry is the most sensitive and widely used technique for tritium detection in liquid wastes. Sample preparation is a critical step in obtaining accurate results in scintillation counting. The primary objective of all sample preparation methods is to obtain a stable, clear and homogeneous solution suitable for analysis by liquid scintillation counting. The solubilization method is a very simple method and the capital outlay is low, but sample sizes are very low, time to complete solubilization can vary from a few hours to many hours, loss of radioactivity by volatilization may occur. The combustion method provides accurate results and is more suited to determine the tritium content in organic solvents. The only limitation is the initial capital investment.
