Ascorbate peroxidase activity of cytochrome c

The peroxidase-type reactivity of cytochrome c is proposed to play a role in free radical production and/or apoptosis. This study describes cytochrome c catalysis of peroxide consumption by ascorbate. Under conditions where the sixth coordination position at the cytochrome c heme iron becomes more accessible for exogenous ligands (by carboxymethylation, cardiolipin addition or by partial denaturation with guanidinium hydrochloride) this peroxidase

Derivatization of hemoglobin with periodate-generated reticulation agents: evaluation of oxidative reactivity for potential blood substitutes

Periodate modification of the sugar moiety in sugars, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP), has previously been employed in order to prepare dialdehyde-type reagents, which were then utilized in crosslinking reactions on haemoglobin, yielding polymerized material with useful dioxygen-binding properties and hence proposed as possible artificial oxygen carriers (‘blood substitutes’). Here, the periodate protocol is shown to be applicable to a

Influence of Intermittent Heating during Maceration on the Antioxidant Capacity of some Grape Seeds and Skins

Ethanolic extracts from seeds and skins of three red grape varieties, namely 'Cabernet Sauvignon', 'Merlot' and 'Burgund' from a Romanian winery, were prepared by maceration using different temperature conditions. The stable free radicals DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl) and Tempol (4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-N-oxyl) were used in order to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. The variation in time of free radical concentration

SYNTHESIS, SPECTROSCOPIC AND ELECTROCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF A NEW CHROMIUM (III) SUBSTITUTED DAWSON POLYOXOMETALAT

A new chromium (III) substituted Dawson 2-molybdo-15-tungsto- 2-phosphate K7[Cr(H2O)P2Mo2W15O61]·17H2O was synthesized by reaction of Cr(III) chloride with monolacunary Dawson molybdo-tungsto-diphosphates [P2Mo2W15O61]10- in aqueous solution. The complex has been characterized using spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The FT-IR spectroscopic data indicate that the polyanion overall symmetry is restored after the coordination of Cr(III).

Redox reactivity in propolis: direct detection of free radicals in basic medium and interaction with hemoglobin

Propolis is one of many natural products with known antioxidant properties. The present work aims to investigate the intimate molecular level mechanisms of this antioxidant reactivity. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-detectable free radical signals are described here for the first time in propolis extracts. The shape of these signals and the conditions in which they were obtained, point to polyphenolic flavonoids as the sites of the radicals.

In vivo study regarding antioxidant effect of red grape polyphenol extract using biochemical and FT-IR methods

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of red grape polyphenol extract in menopause. The results showed that plasma level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is significantly higher in ovariectomized rats, standardized food than in rats with false ovariectomy, standardized food. The plasma level of ROS decreased significantly in ovariectomized rats with supplemental grape polyphenol extract compared to ovariectomized rats, standardized food.

Synthesis and characterization of spin labeled nicotinic acid derivatives in some biological environments

The 3- and 4-[N-4-(2,2,6,6-tertamethylpiperidinyloxy)]-carboxamide-1-R-( where R=methyl or R=dodecyl)-pyridinium-iodide free radicals were synthesized and investigated as new useful spin labels. X-band EPR spectra of all four compounds were studied in the presence of multilamelar liposomes and blood proteins. The spectra were analyzed by using a computer simulation for obtaining the characteristic magnetic parameters. We investigated the influence

Antioxidant activity, of some types of white wines and juices investigated by EPR spectroscopy

Two types of white wines with different places of provenience, and a few types of commercial and fresh natural juices were choused for preliminary studies of their antioxidant characteristics by using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Antioxidant capacity of these samples was assessed using stable free radicals such as nitroxide radical Tempol (2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine-oxyl), as paramagnetic agent. The inhibition

Gamma-irradiated Extravit M nutritive supplement studied by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

An unirradiated and g-irradiated nutritive supplement named ExtraVit M was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)spectroscopy in order to detect stable paramagnetic species following improvement of hygienic quality by g-radiation. Free radicals were induced by g-radiation in the studied samples from low absorbed doses, showing a certain sensibility of these samples to the radiation treatment. The EPR spectrum of irradiated ExtraVit M is
