Analysis of the nonlinear behavior of ascaris trypsin inhibitor from NMR data

The conformational change of the trypsin inhibitor induced by pH variation was analysed in terms of the nonlinear characteristics of the atomic temperature factors series. It was found that an attractor with dimension 2.24 controls the conformational change.

Geomagnetic activity and life I. Emergency calls in an orthopaedic clinic

We analysed the daily number of emergency call-outs in an orthopaedic clinic for the period 1995-1999 and the corresponding index Ap of daily global geomagnetic activity. We found that both kinds of the annual time series represent fractal dynamics as revealed by the Fast Fourier Transform of the series. The time series showed a seasonal wave like pattern. The minimum and maximum values of these waves revealed, to a first approximation, a negative

Life in zero magnetic field III. Activity of aspartate aminotrasnferase and alanine aminotrasferase during in vitro aging of human blood

The activity of the enzymes were investigated both in human blood during in vitro aging in normal geomagnetic field and in zero magnetic field (ZMF) respectively. It was found that ZMF diminshed to a significant extent the activity of both enzymes.

Life in zero magnetic field II. Effect of zinc and copper in human blood serum during in vitro aging

We measured the total concentration of Zn and Cu in the human blood serum during in vitro aging in normal geomagentic field and zero magnetic field respectively (ZMF). The investigaton was carried out on blood collected from normal patients and brochial asthma patients. It was found that only copper was sensitive to the magnetic environment. The peculiar finding was that the in vitro aging effect of the blood was slowed down for most of the asthma

Life in zero magnetic fields I. In vitro human blood aging

Human blood samples were exposed up to 72h to zero magnetic field (ZMF)conditions and compared to samples kept in the normal geomagnetic field. It was found that in ZMF the rate of sodium and calcium inflow into erythrocytes and the potassium outflow increased. The magnitude of the change was around 100%. It is suggested that the main effect is due to the reduction of the Na-K ATPase and Ca-ATPase activity in ZMF.

Comparison of the behavior of sea hare myoglobin when it forms two different complexes

Sea hare myoglobin temperature factors changes when it reacts with imidazole. The change is characterized by a strange attractor with the correlation dimension 4.2. However when the same myoglobin reacts with cyanide, the result is a lack of an attractor. This may suggest that the binding of cyanide does not involve a conformational change.

Scaling in cognition

Can mind produce randomness? Various human subjects were asked to produce random sequences of integers. The series were analysed by FFT, detrended fluctuation analysis, information and approximate entropy. It was found that only a fraction of the subjects were able to produce close to random series. The results do seem to favor neither Penrose's nor Goertzel's theories of consciousness. Most of the subjects produced series characterized by a 1/f^1/4

Quarter power scaling in dynamics: experimental evidence from cell biology and cognitive psychology

1/4 scaling of various biological variables in relation to body mass is universal in biology. We present evidence for 1/4 scaling in dynamical processes from two different experiments: fluctuation of the erythrocyte diameter and a task of random generation of series of numbers by human subjects....
