premii Ad Astra

Asociația Ad Astra a anunțat câștigătorii Premiilor Ad Astra 2022: http://premii.ad-astra.ro/. Proiectul și-a propus identificarea și popularizarea modelelor de succes, a rezultatelor excepționale ale cercetătorilor români din țară și din afara ei.

Asociatia Ad Astra a cercetatorilor romani lanseaza BAZA DE DATE A CERCETATORILOR ROMANI DIN DIASPORA.

Molecular conformation changes along the malignancy revealed by optical nanosensors

An interdisciplinary approach employing functionalized nanoparticles and ultrasensitive spectroscopic techniques is reported here to track the molecular changes in early stage of malignancy. Melanoma tissue tracking at molecular level using both labelled and unlabelled silver and gold nanoparticles has been achieved using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. We used skin tissue from ex vivo mice with induced melanoma. Raman and SERS

Evaluation and differentiation of the Betulaceae birch bark species and their bioactive triterpene content using analytical FT-vibrational spectroscopy and GC-MS

We employed vibrational FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy as rapid, sensitive and efficient techniques for qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of the pentacyclic triterpene based natural products as highly effective anticancer agents obtained from the Betula pendula Roth birch bark. Nine bark samples from the abundant forest flora of Apuseni Mountains, Romania were Raman evaluated concerning their triterpenes content. Additionally, three different

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and complementary techniques applied for the investigation of an Italian cultural heritage canvas

A cultural heritage canvas from the early 19th century, painted by the Vaccaro brothers for the church of Niscemi, province of Caltanissetta, Sicily, was analyzed using Fourier transform (FT)-Raman, attenuated total reflectance-FT-infrared and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The painting, still used in religious rites related to the Easter mass ('la calata da tila'), depicts the scene of the Crucifixion and is executed in a

A Network Analysis of Global Banking: 1978–2010

We analyze the global banking network using data on cross-border banking flows for 184 countries during 1978–2010. We find that the density of the global banking network defined by these flows is pro-cyclical, expanding and contracting with the global cycle of capital flows. We also find that country connectedness in the network tends to rise before banking and debt crises and to fall in their aftermath. Despite a historically unique build-up in

Global Poverty Estimates: A Sensitivity Analysis

Current estimates of global poverty vary substantially across studies. We undertake a sensitivity analysis to highlight the importance of methodological choices by measuring global poverty using different data sources, parametric and nonparametric estimation methods, and multiple poverty lines. Our results indicate that estimates of global poverty vary significantly when they are based alternately on data from household surveys versus national accounts

Thermal air oxidation of Fe: rapid hematite nanowire growth and photoelectrochemical water splittiperformance

Different iron oxide structures were formed by annealing of iron foils in air at temperatures between 500 °C to 800 °C. Depending on temperature, a significant variation in the hematite/magnetite ratio and a strongly temperature dependent morphology is obtained. While over a wide range of conditions more or less compact Fe3O4/Fe2O3 layers are obtained, at 600 °C rapid growth (several micrometer per hour) of highly crystalline hematite nanowires

Thermally induced release of internal liquid phase encapsulated in a polymer membrane grown by photoactivated DLICVD

An encapsulation of a liquid phase in a thin poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) membrane is achieved in one step by pulsed direct liquid injection (DLI)CVD. The polymer thin film is grown by photo-activation of the gas phase. An original step of the process, described as thermally induced release of internal liquid phase, permits control of the encapsulated liquid during the CVD polymerization. This step highlights a phenomenon that facilitates a conversion
