Is subtotal thyroidectomy an obsolete indication for the management of benign multinodular goiter?

Introduction. In our department the standard surgical procedure for multinodular goiter used to be subtotal resection. Over the years, total thyroidectomy has progressively replaced subtotal resections and is performed in most of our patients at present. Patients and Methods. In a prospective cohort, observational study, we assessed the immediate surgical outcome in 742 consecutive patients with multinodular goiter (MNG), admitted for surgery and

Combined therapy of experimental pancreatic cancer with CYP2B1 producing cells: low-dose ifosfamide and local tumor irradiation

Local therapy of pancreatic cancer with microencapsulated CYP2B1-producing cells and ifosfamide showed an effect both on the primary tumor and on distant metastatases. This possibly represents a consequence of the activation of immune response. Other studies have demonstrated that local tumor irradiation leads to the activation of the intratumoral lymphocyte infiltration. The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of the combined therapy

Loss of heterozygosity in the HLA class I region in human pancreatic cancer

An altered human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I expression constitutes an important tumor-escape mechanism counteracting T-cell mediated immune responses. We utilized the technique of microsatellite analysis to characterize the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in the HLA class I region in 24 samples of patients with human ductal pancreatic carcinoma. The expression of HLA class I and the infiltration by T cells were studied in parallel by standard immunohistochemistry.

Staging laparoscopy in gastric cancer. Accuracy and impact on therapy

BACKGROUND: Surgical therapy remains the most effective treatment modality in gastric cancer. The importance of multimodal treatment for advanced gastric cancer has contributed to the development of more accurate preoperative staging strategies. We examined the diagnostic accuracy of staging laparoscopy (SL) for abdominal metastases and the predictive value of SL for tumor resectability. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a prospective, cohort, observational

Staging laparoscopy in digestive cancers

BACKGROUND. Laparoscopy and laparoscopic ultrasonography may assist in the more accurate staging of digestive cancers. We assessed the diagnostic value of staging laparoscopy in patients with cancers of lower esophagus, stomach, liver, biliary tract, pancreas and colon. MATERIAL AND METHOD. Extended staging laparoscopy, laparoscopic ultrasonography and peritoneal cytology were performed in 165 patients with primary digestive cancers, admitted between

Soft Computing Strategies in Multiobjective Optimization

Traditional optimization methods applied to solve real life problems can experience local or unstable behavior. Researchers proposed recently non-traditional search and optimization methods based on natural phenomena like natural evolution, social behavior, and annealing. This paper considers migration algorithms and bees’ algorithms as good candidates to solve multi-objective optimization problems.

On Ranking Software Reliability Growth Models by Subjective Data Analysis

This paper presents recent approaches in subjective data analysis by soft computing techniques to manage imprecision and uncertainty which appear in software reliability engineering. Firstly, recent approaches like imprecise probabilities, generalized intervals, fuzzy sets and intuitionistic-fuzzy sets are shortly described, and the usage of intuitionistic fuzzy numbers for system reliability computation is shown. Intuitionistic-fuzzy approaches

Optimal Reliability Allocation for Large Software Projects through Soft Computing Techniques

Software architecture is considered as a critical design methodology for the development of complex software. As an important step in software quality assurance, the optimal reliability allocation for software projects can be obtained by minimizing the total cost of achieving the target reliability or maximizing the system reliability subject to budget constraints. These kinds of optimization problems were considered both in deterministic and stochastic

Mass Spectra Splitting of some Compounds Containing Both Azulenic and Benzocrown Ethers Moieties

Several azo derivatives containing both azulene and benzocrown ethers were investigated using mass spectroscopy-ESI method. The compounds form stable protonated molecular ions in positive method and deprotonated anions in negative method. The parent peaks were broken at higher energies and some general rules for their scission were evidenced.
