Case Studies Regarding Contamination Remediation of Polluted Soils from Industrial Establishments with Closed Activities

The paper present aspects regarding the identification and evaluation of the environmental hazards and risks of two former industrial sites having significant ground contamination related to chemical works, methodological and mechanical production. The main aim of the study is the reduction of the risks to soil and waters, based on the risk assessment, remedial actions were proposed.

Risks associated to soil pollution in the proximity of tailing facilities in the western area of Baia Mare

Baia Mare town is situated in Northern side of Romania and it is well known for the old mining activities deployed in the area. The hazardous waste landfills positioning directly on the soil without other protection it is known as being a source of pollution for the underground, and the wastes resulted from ore processing are included in the hazardous waste category, due to their hazardous substances content and their large quantities. This study

Preliminary investigation and risk assessment of contamination on an industrial site in Maramures County

Sites contaminated with hazardous material are a topical and urgent problem all over the world. Risk based remediation is used to develop maximum safety cost effective sanitation methods for future land users. The analyzed site lays within the North Western region of Romania, in the vicinity of Baia Mare, the main city in Maramures County. Taking into account the former activities conducted on the site, as well as future demolishing works and future

Management of risks associated to mining wastes (tailings dams and waste heaps)

Abstract. The paper presents significant aspects regarding risk management related to wastes in the Romanian mining industry. There are studied two subjects of interest: the waste heaps and tailing dams, intending to perform a preliminary analysis of the risks induced upon the environment. Best practice environmental management requires mitigation of risks of environmental damage from unexpected incidents occurring in mining industry. Consequently,

Integrated tailing dams management in Baia Mare area, Romania

The paper presents the waste management of tailing dam facilities from Baia Mare area, Romania, an old mining region where the extraction and the processing of gold-silver ore and the complex ore is a tradition. The main characteristic of tailing dam facilities from that area is that they are in the final phase of their life cycle, respectively in the closure, post-closure or conservation phase. This is one of the reasons why implementing the suitable

Spectral properties of (854) Frostia, (1333) Cevenola and (3623) Chaplin

Near-infrared spectroscopy can play a key role in establishing the mineralogical composition of objects and supporting other physical data obtained by complementary observational techniques such as adaptive optics, radar and photometry. The objective of our survey was asteroids that present large variations in their light curves. We report observations for asteroids (854) Frostia, (1333) Cevenola and (3623) Chaplin carried out in the 0.8-2.5 μm

Automated classification of topography from SRTM data using object-based image analysis

We introduce an object-based method to automatically classify topography from SRTM data. The new method relies on the concept of decomposing land-surface complexity into more homogeneous domains. An elevation layer is automatically segmented and classified at three scale levels that represent domains of complexity by using self-adaptive, data-driven techniques. For each domain, scales in the data are detected with the help of local variance and segmentation

A generic procedure for semantics-oriented landform classification using object-based image analysis

In most landform classification studies – either per cell or object-based – the authors have ignored modeling the semantics of landforms explicitly. Thus, landform classification schemes rely on individual knowledge, and are too much tailored to specific areas and/or scales. Integration of structured knowledge models in the classification process has been proposed to overcome the limitations in transferability. We are working towards a general
