Vacancies at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI)

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research
(AWI) Bremerhaven, Germany, is inviting applications for a
Postdoctoral Scientist Position to work within the HGF-Young
Investigators Group „Global change and the future marine carbon
cycle.” The group investigates anthropogenic effects, particularly the
rise of the atmospheric CO2 concentration and global temperature on
the marine carbon cycle.

The position is to be filled by October 2005 or as soon as possible
thereafter for a duration of three years. The candidate will work
within a biogeochemically interested research team and perform studies
on the influence of CO2, temperature, and nutrients on marine
phytoplankton production, in particular on the production of dissolved
organic matter (DOM). He/she will set up pH- and
temperature-controlled chemostats for the continuous culture of marine
phytoplankton species and will perform various limitation experiments.
The candidate is expected to participate in several cruises and
mesocosm studies.

We are further seeking to recruit a biologist with a Ph.D. in
Oceanography, Limnology, or a related discipline who has practical
experience in working with chemostat cultures. We expect extensive
knowledge on plant (phytoplankton) physiology and the ability to
mathematically describe phytoplankton dynamics within the chemostat.
We welcome candidates with experience in the application of isotopes
to measure uptake and production processes.

The AWI is an equal opportunity employer and especially encourages
female scientists to apply.

With different arrangements the AWI supports work-life-balance. In
Bremerhaven the AWI offers own children-day-care facilities.

Issues relating to the scientific aspects of this position may be
addressed to Dr. Anja Engel (aengel _at_ awi-bremerhaven.de).

Qualified applicants should submit applications (including CV, copies
of certificates, list of publications and reprints of three selected
publications) until August 15, stating the reference number 35/HGF/I
to:
