Rezumat:

This paper reports two experiments conducted within the structural approach to social representations. Both identified general psychosocial processes in a specific case of collective risk (earthquake). The first experiment (N=298) tested the effects of prior risk experience on one component of the personal involvement, the perceived capacity for action, and on the structure of social representations of risk. Results show that experiencing a major earthquake triggers the significant decrease of the perceived capacity for action, whereas the social representation of risk becomes significantly more structured and more functional. The second experiment (N=135) tested the effect of two factors that are likely to support engagement in risk mitigation behavior: the participants’ perceived capacity for action and their sociability. Results show that the level of engagement increases with both factors.
