Photochemical study of porphyrin aggregates

Porphyrins can form a variety of structures from linear head-to-tail or J-aggregates to fractal aggregates with different and specific photophysical properties.
The aggregation process of some sensitizers such as tetrakis(4-sulphonatophenyl) porphyrin (TSPP) and chlorophyll (ChL) are investigated by different spectral techniques: absorption, fluorescence, transmission and scanning microscopy. The excited states lifetimes and the aggregation process for these two essential porphyrins, are discussed in this paper.
Also, the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images are analized in order to obtain fractal dimensions of 3-dimensional porphyrin objects obtained by aggregation and a correlation with the transient absorption studies is achieved for the studied porphyrin.
