In this paper we present regional differences in species number – pond area relationships between two groups of vertebrates differing in life cycles and ecological requirements: amphibians and birds. The study was conducted in two regions of Romania: the Tarnava Basin and the Fizes Valley. Ponds from Tarnava are percentually more vegetated with emergent aquatic vegetation cover (Phragmites sp. and Typha sp.). The amphibian species richness in ponds is higher in Tarnava than in Fizes, and conversely, Fizes contains a higher diversity of bird species. The diversity of the amphibian species is not related to the pond area, however, there is a strong positive relationship in both regions between the amphibian species richness and the percentage of emergent vegetation cover. Birds species diversity, on the other hand, is positively related to both the pond area and the vegetation cover. The z values of the species–area relationship for amphibians are low in both regions and slightly negative in Tarnava. Whereas in the case of birds, the z value is larger in Tarnava than in Fizes. This suggests that the number of species increases more with pond area in Tarnava than in Fizes.
