The Degenerative Mitral Valve Regurgitation: From Geometrical Echocardiographic Concepts to Successful Surgical Repair;

The book "Echocardiography - In Specific Diseases" brings together contributions from well- known researchers from around the world, some of them specialized in imaging science in their clinical orientation, but also representatives from academic medical centers. Each chapter is structured and written to be accessible to those with a basic knowledge of echocardiography but also to be stimulating and informative to experts and researchers in the field

From early to late ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction: the role of echocardiographic assessment in surgical decisions

Left ventricular (LV) remodeling following a myocardial infarction (MI) is a pathologically process of change in size, shape and volumes, wall thickness and function of the heart. Remodeling changes begin in the acute period of MI and tend to continue long after that, leading to LV dysfunction and severe heart failure in late phases. Therefore, early diagnosis of the LV remodeling is of a major importance, both for assessing the cardiovascular prognostic

Aorto-pulmonary fistula as a late complication of multiple valve replacement after Streptococcus Bovis endocarditis in a patient with occult colon carcinoma

We report a case of aorto-pulmonary fistula following multiple valve surgery in a patient with colon carcinoma who had had recurrent episodes of Streptococcus Bovis endocarditis. Diagnosis was made by transesophageal echocardiography and aortography. Patient underwent emergency percutaneous implantation of an aortic endoprosthesis, but he continued to deteriorate and the fatal outcome could not be changed. This case underscores the importance of

Persistent left superior vena cava

Case report Summary This case illustrate the echocardiographic diagnosis of persistent left superior vena cava in an asymptomatic 36 year old man who underwent a routine exam for a physical fitness programme. Pitfalls and limitations of colour and pulsed Doppler are also discussed.

Mitral stenosis from anatomy to therapeutical decision

Abstract Mitral valve stenosis covers a large spectrum of pathological modifications and involves both the elements of the valve as well as adjacent structures. In the Western world, older patients come nowadays to the examining physician or to the surgeon raising more complex and complicated issues regarding both the diagnosis and the surgical therapy. A thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy of the mitral valve and respectively, of the pathological

The Mitrale valve: New insights into the clinical anatomy

The thorough knowledge of anatomical details regarding the mitral valve is of utmost importance fordiagnostic interrogation and surgery. Considering the mitral valve into the larger context of "the mitralvalvar complex" adds new and important details from the anatomic and physiologic points of view. Thisreview article presents the more recent data and ideas regarding this vast topic and underlines somepractical clinical applications. Eventually,
