The EI mass spectra (ms) of dimethylacetal of 3- and 4- nitrobenzophenones have been obtained. The analysis of the experimental spectra evidenced a number of similar fragmentations of these compounds. The new differential techniques of mass spectra establish the nitro group position of the aromatic ring.

The paper presents the 7 step preparation of (2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl) phenyl sulfone and (3-O-benzyl-4,6-benzilidene-β-D-glucopyranosyl) phenyl sulfone starting from the same starting material.The key step is the benzylation in PTC conditions of 4,6-benzylidene-1-thio-β-D-glucopiranoside which furnish both precursors for two phenyl sulphone synthesis. The structural characteristics of the mono- and disubstituted isomers are correlated with the characteristic fragmentation ions and thus the use of GC-MS as monitoring technique for the separation of mono- and dinitrobenzophenones mixtures is justified.
