Rezumat:

Based on principles of cognitive semantics such as metaphor and metonimy as cognitive processes and sistematicity of idioms, this paper attempts to identify similarities and differences between idioms containing the words „água” and „apã” (that both mean „water”) in Romanian and Portuguese. Several types os similarities were identified between the metaphors and metonymies that originated idioms in these two languages. In some cases both source domain and target domain are siminar, in others the target domain is slightly different because of the influence that culture has over language. There are idioms specific for each language, but they are not the most frequent ones. Moreover, most of the idioms have formal equivalents in both languages, which accounts for the similarities between Romanian and Portuguese
