premii Ad Astra

Asociația Ad Astra a anunțat câștigătorii Premiilor Ad Astra 2022: http://premii.ad-astra.ro/. Proiectul și-a propus identificarea și popularizarea modelelor de succes, a rezultatelor excepționale ale cercetătorilor români din țară și din afara ei.

Asociatia Ad Astra a cercetatorilor romani lanseaza BAZA DE DATE A CERCETATORILOR ROMANI DIN DIASPORA.

Advances in Planar Lipid Bilayers and Liposomes, Chapter Four intitled “Methods for Multiscale Modeling of Membranes”

Multiscale modeling is a recent approach to simulating molecular systems, such as membranes and liposomes, in which different levels of detail are combined. By using distinct models it is often possible to speed up or enrich the sampling of a given system. Examples are: the use in Molecular Dynamics simulations of both coarse-grained and fine-grained representations, either simultaneously or alternating in time or space domains. Another possible

Computer Tomography Investigation of Defects

The purpose of this paper is to show the possibility of finding the location and to describe internal discontinuities in plates made of plastic materials using non-destructive evaluation methods. Their effect on the mechanical behaviour is also evaluated by means of numerical calculus. The technique of computer tomography („CT”) is used as a non-destructive evaluation method whereas the numerical calculus is realized by the finite element method.

Hypoxia Sensitivity of a Voltage-Gated Potassium Current in Porcine Intrapulmonary Vein Smooth Muscle Cells

Hypoxia contracts the pulmonary vein but the underlying cellular effectors remain unclear. Utilizing contractile studies and whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology, we report for the first time a hypoxia-sensitive K(+) current in porcine pulmonary vein smooth muscle cells (PVSMC). Hypoxia induced a transient contractile response that was 41±7% of the control response (80 mM KCl). This contraction required extracellular Ca(2+) and was sensitive

Human islet amyloid polypeptide at the air–aqueous interface: a Langmuir monolayer approach

Human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) is the source of the major component of the amyloid deposits found in the islets of Langerhans of around 95 per cent type 2 diabetic patients. The formation of aggregates and mature fibrils is thought to be responsible for the dysfunction and death of the insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells. Investigation on the conformation, orientation and self-assembly of the hIAPP at time zero could be beneficial for

Surface Chemistry and Spectroscopy of Human Insulin Langmuir Monolayer

The human insulin (HI) protein was examined to elucidate its structure at the air-water interface. Optimal experimental conditions were determined to prepare a homogeneous and stable human insulin (HI) Langmuir monolayer. HI insulin Langmuir monolayer can be used to study interactions of HI with a membrane as Langmuir monolayers are used as in vitro model of biological membranes. Surface pressure and surface potential-area isotherms were used to

On the structural relaxation of Fe65Gd5 Cr10B20 amorphous alloys

In the present paper the isothermal kinetics relaxation of Fe65Gd5 Cr10B20 amorphous alloys is studied by analyzing the changes of the Curie temperature (Tc). An activation energy ɛa = 2.0 ± 0.1 eV and a mean value of the frequency of jumps υ0 = 6.68 × 1013 Hz are determined.

TOURISM AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: A PANEL DATA APPROACH

This article focuses on the importance of tourism by investigating the relationship between tourist arrivals and the tourism share in economic growth. The findings are consistent with the lit erature on tourism. Tourist arrivals have positive impact on economic growth. We also find that bilateral trade and investment output are determinants of economic growth. This paper specifies static and dynamic panel models for the period of 19952008 between

•Foreign Direct Investment and Globalization

The main objective of this article is to explain the link between foreign direct investment and globalization. The determinants of the location were used as market size, human capital, and urban population. Beyond these one institutional variable was introduced – the impact of global ization on FDI. The study applies a panel data approach (fixed effects and GMM system estimator). The results show that market size and globalization have positive

INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE IN THE AUTOMOBILE

∗This study examines the determinants of intra-industry trade (IIT), horizontal IIT (HIIT) and vertical IIT (VIIT) in the automobile industry in Portugal. The trade in this sector between Portugal and the European Union (EU-27) was examined, between 1995 and 2008. These results indicate that intra-industry trade occurs more frequently among countries that are similar in terms of factor endowments. The findings support the theory that, in general,

•Immigration and Trade

This paper investigates the relationship between intra-industry trade (IIT), horizontal IIT, vertical IIT (VIIT) and immigration flows using a gravity model for the period 1995-2008 amongst Portugal and European Union’s Member States (EU-27). Using a panel data approach, the results show a positive correlation between immigration and IIT. These outcomes indicate that the immigration can reduce transaction costs between home and host country. We
