Rezumat:
Transylvania is one of the most representative type regions of the Romanian Paleogene and Neogene. The sedimentary record consists mainly of shallow marine and continental deposits, which have been studied since the late 19th century.
Following the scheme of Hofmann (1879), the original names of the lithostratigraphic units were given mainly by using descriptive terms. Although the contributions of the last decades tried to put order in the stratigraphy of the Cenozoic deposits, there are still many aspects that need attention and further approach.
The major lithostratigraphic units and their relationship in different regions of Transylvania are presented.
