Rezumat:

The book with the title: Towns from Wallachia until the end of the XVIth century deals with the urban phenomenon, trying to fill a historiographical gap. The founding of medieval cities is a complex process, taking place over two centuries, a simultaneous phenomenon with the defining process of statal formation of Walachia (13th-14th centuries). We have tried to show that, to the urban development, several elements made their contribution: economy (fairs), politics (court and the help of local or central power), geography (favourable placement). Besides the local rulers’ courts there were suburbs, with comercial function, where fairs were organized, periodical at the beginning, then permanent, exchange places for the villages around and the court and its servants, a fact also backed up by numerous coins, pottery, tools and guns. We think that, after the founding of Walachia, the reign also ruled over the local rulers’ courts, as well as over the villages near by, which reseived a special statute. These pacements also were taken as princiary cities due to the communities of foreign colonists, coming from thr south of Carpathians, called by the local princes, or by the reign. Foreigners and Catholics, most of them were Saxons who received priviledges, as the right of raising Churches, organizing, trialing, local ruling. Through them, the internal organization of urban communities appeared, as institutions we find in Hungary and Serbia, namely judetul, pargarii, birarii or folnogii. There cannot be denied an influence in the Romanian medival city come through foreigners colonists, as the word we now use for naming the urban places are of Hungarian origin (oras from varos, in Romanian language since the 14th century); on the same hand, the names for the representatives of urban communities are of German and Hungarian origin, as the paper reveals. The paper received the Romanian Academy Award (for 2004).
